One of the projects I've been working on in my free time has been some custom edits to some Magic the Gathering trading cards. It's a fun game, and I play mostly because I love the art and graphics. However, if you could draw wouldn't you want to make some yourself?
First I use Goo-Gone to wear away the protective coating, then the ink. It took me a few cards (one of which melted to the foam plate I was working on) before I got down how much, and how long it took to wear them down without damaging the card. Once done its a little thin, but has a paper like feel that makes it easy to draw on.
Then I used my pencil to sketch my piece on the card, then I inked it, and went to town with my colored pencils. I'm no good with sharpies and acrylics, or I would have used them.
The cards in the photo are (from left to right): Top Row: Bloodthorn Taunter, Druid of the Anima, Vectis Agents, and Soul's Grace Bottom Row: Rupture Spire, Oblivion Ring, and a Mountain (themed after one of my favorite cards: Chandra Nalaar)
This is amazing. You've done an awesome job with these, and you've inspired me to try this myself with some cards. If only just to see the look on some people's faces when I play said cards at a tournament.
I've never heard of Goo-Gone. What is it exactly?

It took me over a year, but I finally realized I don't need a signature.
Goo-Gone is a chemical for removing stains, and cleaning things. I've used it to get dried glue off of things, or gummy crap off of various things.
I found it works well, if applied lightly, to Magic Cards for removing the protective coating and the ink. I tape off what I want to stay, and go to town with the rubbing. It takes a while, but you get a clean card out of it.
It works well, and makes the card surface similar to paper.

I'm actually working on a Pauper Burn deck as a custom set. It's what I'm trying to do now for custom cards.
It scares me to do rares. I've only done one, but as a sample I want to do one of each type; Creature, Arifact, Land, Enchanment, Sorcery, Instant, and a Planeswalker.

How long do you apply the goo gone? looking back I think I want to try some lands. Seeing as they are only basic lands and not to hard to pick up I'll try some of my poor art on them.
It's trial and error. It all depends on how hard you rub, and how much you use at a time. It's not a VERY exact science. If you do it to much it will eat away and ruin the card. I've melted a mountain to a foam plate before. It's pretty fun looking. To much will make the card thin, and I've had one out of four local judges think that it was a grey error because of the thickness on several cards.
The decks I use as of 10/1/09 are: 1) Naya Fatties 2) Angels 3) Elven Overrun 4) Red Black Creature Burn 5) Esper (Under Construction) 6) Naya Burn (Planechase)

I dont much play outside of limited, and then it's only basement magic. Mostly due to the fact I dont much care for for the people who have outrageous amounts of money and only netdeck then go to tourneys and act like they are all that cause they bought a proven deck.
Now any part of that's really ok, (netdecking still peeves me though).
MY currents are: T2 B/W lifegain/drain U/R control/burn
Also with every set that comes out I start running drafts with my close friends, real casual stuff, just basically playing and screwing around at a table.
I found a style I liked online thanks to a friend, and used that to fix the framework for my FNM and Tournament deck (Naya Fatties). I hate running decks right off the internet. No originality to it.
My group also does drafts in our circle. We're doing on for the new Zendikar this weekend.

But I digress, you have some talent there, and if I had any skills, I'd make a common deck with altered art like that.

And then I usually sell the packs off at 3 for the draft and keep some for my self.
Which reminds me I have to pick it up tommorrow after classes.
